Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain extension is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained working.
